ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Altus Airpower Stampede Open House and Air Show showcased the mission of the Mighty 97th and the Air Force’s airpower capabilities to over 40,000 spectators at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, on April 12-13, 2025. This was the base’s first two-day air show in 24 years.
“This open house and air show was an outstanding way to inspire the next generation of military members, aviators, scientists, and engineers,” said Lt. Col. Scott Heinlein, Altus Airpower Stampede airshow director. “Shows like these have a huge impact on recruiting and retention and are a great way to build our relationship with the community.”
The event featured a lineup of military and civilian performers including the F-22 Demonstration Team, an F-35A Lightning II flyby, and Mobility’s Hometown demo teams from the 58th Airlift Squadron, 54th Air Refueling Squadron, and the 56th ARS.
Additionally, historical aircraft like the B-29 Superfortress ‘Doc’, the P-51 Mustang Gunfighter, and TORA! TORA! TORA! brought their performances to the skies above Altus.
In total, more than 20 aircraft soared for displays of skill and coordination, while more than 15 static displays allowed visitors to get up close with a variety of aircraft used in military and civilian aviation.
Beyond the aerial excitement, the airshow provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about the role the 97th AMW plays in training exceptional mobility Airmen. The event also featured hands-on STEM exhibits designed to inspire future generations of Airmen.
“During the STEM fair, we were immersed in the full atmosphere of what the 97th AMW is all about,” said Gwen Breakebill, 97th AMW school liaison. “It’s exciting to see our Airmen interact and share their passions of what they do here on the installation within our community.”
The success of the air show was made possible through the combined efforts of Airmen from every group on base - the 97th Operations Group, 97th Mission Support Group, 97th Maintenance Group, 97th Medical Group and the 97th Wing Staff Agencies.
“It was a massive team effort to plan and execute this air show,” Heinlein said. “It was awe-inspiring to see teams from across the entire base from different functional areas come together toward a common goal.”
The Altus Airpower Stampede united the local community and the Airmen of the Mighty 97th in a shared celebration of airpower, heritage, and innovation.
