A 'small bite' into National Nutrition Month

  • Published

March madness and four-leaf clovers come to mind when most people think of the month of March.

However, March is also National Nutrition Month and is a great time to be mindful of what we eat.

In 1973, a presidential proclamation put a campaign in motion called “National Nutrition Week.” The campaign’s purpose was to deliver nutritional education to the masses through media.  Soon after, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics became involved by embracing this campaign, teaching at school events and through public affairs.

In the 1980’s, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics became the spokesperson for the entire National Nutrition Month. Their mission was to reach a larger audience and promote nutrition through a healthy diet.

After many years of hard work, the month became so marketable that you could find billboards, posters and milk cartons promoting a healthy lifestyle.

National Nutrition Month has become consistently more popular over its 43 years. In honor of National Nutrition Month, Lt. Col. Lisa Tauai, the 47 Medical Support Squadron commander and registered dietitian, will be offering a Nutrition 101 course March 10 and 17 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Health Promotions Kitchen (located in the Fitness Center). After this month, classes will be offered the second Thursday of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to assist our Laughlin personnel and their families in leading a healthier lifestyle.

For more information, please visit the Choose MyPlate website where you will find great tips on how to make your plate a whole lot healthier. Let March be the month you begin making healthier food choices for you and your family!
