DR. DAVID A. HARDY

Dr. David A. Hardy, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is the Associate Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for Space, and the Deputy Director, Principal Depart of Defense Space Advisor Staff, the Pentagon, Arlington, Va. In this role, he is responsible for integrating and overseeing all DoD space capabilities and activities, coordinating with the intelligence community, and providing support to the Secretary of Defense on space portfolio decisions.

Additionally, as Associate Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for Space, he provides the principal support to the Under Secretary’s role as the Headquarters U.S. Air Force focal point for space matters and in coordinating activities across the Air Force space enterprise.

Dr. Hardy entered the Air Force as a first lieutenant in 1976, receiving his commission through the ROTC program at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. He began his civilian career at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. Before joining the Directed Energy Directorate, Dr. Hardy served as the Associate Director for Space Technology at Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate also located at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. In this position, he had oversight of AFRL's space science and technology investments and managed the directorate's science and technology portfolio. Dr. Hardy also worked as the AFRL senior space experimentalist and Chief, Battlespace Environment Division, where he administered all research within the Air Force to specify and predict the nature of the space environment. He also served as an adviser on space science and technology to the Air Force Space Command, the Space and Missile Systems Center, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and other organizations. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2006.

Most recently, Dr. Hardy served as Director, Directed Energy Directorate, AFRL, Kirtland AFB, where he led the Air Force's center of expertise for directed energy technology, developing and transitioning research technologies into military systems and was responsible for more than 800 military and civilian scientists, engineers, contractors and support people and an annual budget exceeding $300 million.

Dr. Hardy has published more than 125 papers in national and international journals, and has been directly responsible for the development and flight of more than 35 scientific and operational space flight systems.
