BRIGADIER GENERAL DANIEL P. GILLEN

Brig. Gen. Daniel P. Gillen is the mobilization assistant to the Deputy Surgeon General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Gillen was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Health Professions Scholarship Program in February 1979. Following medical school and his surgery internship and anesthesiology residency, he entered active duty in August 1986 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. He left active-duty service in 1989 and later joined the 932nd U.S. Air Force Contingency Hospital, Scott AFB, Ill. As a traditional Reservist, he has served at Scott AFB as Chief, Professional Services, and commanded two medical squadrons. Previously, he was assigned as the mobilization assistant to the Command Surgeon, Air Combat Command, Langley AFB, Va. From May to July 2007, General Gillen was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as Clinical Director, Critical Care Air Transport Team, 332nd Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight, Balad Air Base, Iraq. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the mobilization assistant to the Command Surgeon, Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, Ill.

In his civilian capacity, General Gillen was a private practice anesthesiologist for eleven years before returning to academic medicine. He was an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St Louis, School of Medicine from 2004 through 2012 where he was Director of Trauma Anesthesia Services. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Saint Louis University Hospital where he serves as the Clinical Director of Anesthesia.
