Lieutenant General DAVID B. LYONS

Lt. Gen. David B. Lyons is the Inspector General of the Department of the Air Force, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Arlington, Virginia. In this capacity, he reports to the Secretary of the Air Force, Air Force Chief of Staff, and Chief of Space Operations on matters concerning Department of the Air Force readiness, efficiency, and military discipline of active duty, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard forces. He also oversees the inspection and evaluation system for all Air Force nuclear and conventional forces; oversees Department of the Air Force counterintelligence operations; investigates fraud, waste, and abuse; oversees criminal investigations; and provides oversight of complaints resolution programs. Lt. Gen. Lyons is also responsible for three field operating agencies: the Air Force Inspection Agency, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center.

Lt. Gen. Lyons entered the Air Force in 1992 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He attended Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training and has held various operational F-35, F-16 and A-10 flying positions. Lt. Gen. Lyons served as a Jump-Battalion Air Liaison Officer for the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and as a strategist for Checkmate. Additionally, he commanded a fighter squadron, operations group, fighter wing, air expeditionary wing, and a numbered air force.

Prior to assuming his current position, Lt. Gen. Lyons was the Commander, 15th Air Force, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. He is a command pilot with more than 2,400 flying hours in the F-35A, F-16C, A-10A/C, T-38 and T-37, to include 530 combat flying hours over Iraq and Afghanistan.
