The Altus Air Force Base Fire Department and members of the Mighty 97th honor those who perished during the attacks of September 11, 2001 by hosting a 9/11 memorial ceremony, September 11, 2019, at the Altus AFB Fire Station, Okla. This ceremony began with the posting of the colors and the playing of the National Anthem followed by the reciting of the Police Officer, Paramedic and Firefighter Prayers by 97 AMW Airmen. The purpose of this ceremony was to honor and remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives on this day 18 years ago during the attacks on 9/11. To conclude the ceremony, the Four Fives Bell was rung. The sound of this bell holds a special meaning for all firefighters, signifying that a comrade has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Following the ceremony, five-, nine- and 11-mile runs were held welcoming Airmen to run in honor of the fallen. This memorial allowed Warrior Airmen and their families from across base to come together as one and honor this unforgettable day.
