KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) partnered with Kirtland’s environmental professionals to host its annual spill prevention exercise. This training is open to all base personnel that are either a part of a spill response team or handle spills reports, petroleum, oils, and lubricants on a regular basis. The training covered operation and maintenance of equipment; discharge procedure protocols; applicable pollution control laws; rules and regulations; general facility operations; spill prevention plan and ended with a Bulk Fuels Facility (BFF) walk through and spill demonstration.

Large containers of water were brought to the BFF and used to simulate spills demonstrating to the exercise participants what a 5 gallon, 30 gallon, and 55 gallon spill looks like as it absorbs into the dirt. A check on learning was conducted ensuring trainees knew what to do in the event of a spill.

The advantages of an effective spill prevention exercise is that it equips response personnel with the knowledge and skills to prevent, mitigate and act in the event of a spill, and decreases the likelihood of hazardous leaks and contamination of water.

This requirement can generally be met through the KAFB SPCC Plan & Spill Prevention Training available on TEACH.
